At The Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara, I moved between two worlds—thrilling drives with the wilderness and a camp that brought me back each time to warmth, ease, and luxury.
I have travelled to a fair share of the world, but there are journeys that transport you. And then there are those that transform you. My arrival at the Masai Mara was the latter. As soon as my small aircraft began its descent over the vast expanse of the Mara, all I could see was an endless golden canvas, punctuated by acacia trees casting long shadows — it felt utterly surreal and I knew I was on the cusp of something extraordinary.
A Sanctuary Suspended Between Earth and Sky
That feeling carried through to my arrival at The Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp. Perched just steps from the Kenya–Tanzania border, the camp’s 20 tented suites—including a Presidential Villa—are set on raised platforms among native acacia trees, offering beautiful views of the riverine forest and the sweeping savannah beyond. I was welcomed by a traditional Maasai blessing and the fresh, earthy scent of leleshwa leaves. It set the tone for everything that followed.
The presidential suite was my home for a few days, and it was nothing short of spectacular. It was a cocoon of canvas and glass with a private plunge pool overlooking the savannah. Mornings began with the distant calls of wildlife, and evenings ended under a sky scattered with stars so vivid they felt almost within reach. The design throughout the reserve is intentional and immersive, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors, and comfort and adventure.

The Art of Safari, Reimagined
The first thing I wanted to do—almost instinctively—was go on a safari. And our guides at The Ritz-Carlton made sure I had the most comfortable and memorable experience. Our mornings began before sunrise. Wrapped in blankets, with a thermos of coffee passed around, we drove out into the stillness as the sky began to soften with light. And then, almost without warning, the Mara came alive. We saw a pride of lions lounging after a hunt, elephants crossing our path and giraffes moving in leisure, and I had to pinch myself to believe that I was not in a dream. We were also lucky enough to see a leopard atop a tree in all its glory and a fabulous sighting of a cheetah!

Our guide and driver kept telling us stories about the animals, the land, and the patterns you wouldn’t notice otherwise. With every drive, I found myself looking a little closer, paying a little more attention. One of my favourite moments was a bush breakfast in the middle of nowhere. A simple table with fresh fruit, warm pastries, and eggs made to order. It sounds simple, and it was, but it felt incredibly indulgent in that setting. Another very thoughtful addition to the experience at The Ritz is the Canon Camera room from where you can borrow cameras from Canon with a zoom lens that helps you capture the wild. Kennedy, a very affable professional photographer, is there to help you edit your pictures after you return from the safari.
Flavours of the Mara
Food is always a big part of how I remember a place, and at the camp, it became an experience in itself. What I loved most was how effortlessly the camp balanced global sophistication with a sense of place. One evening, I found myself enjoying a beautifully plated meal that wouldn’t feel out of place in a fine dining restaurant in Paris. Next, we were dining under the stars, with flavours inspired by local ingredients and African culinary traditions. Most of my meals were at Nest, the camp’s main restaurant. Evenings often began at Canopy, the camp’s bar and lounge. The cocktails were playful without being gimmicky, and I particularly enjoyed the “Spice of Africa” experience, where I could choose my own blend of local spices to infuse into a drink. Additionally, the Upeo Sky Deck offers a completely different perspective of the Mara. Dinner here was slow and unhurried, accompanied by stargazing and stories about the constellations above us.

There were also quieter moments that stayed with me just as much. My butler seemed to understand my preferences without needing much direction. After long mornings out on safari, meals naturally adjusted—lighter and simpler. Evenings, on the other hand, felt more indulgent, often paired with a good glass of wine and time to slow down.
Wellness, Without Trying Too Hard
What surprised me most was how naturally wellness found its way into the experience. There’s no need to “schedule” mindfulness here—it happens to you. In the stillness of the landscape, in the absence of noise, in the sheer scale of nature around you. I spent an afternoon at the Whispering Tree Spa, which takes its name from the acacia trees that hold deep spiritual significance for the Maasai. Treatments here are inspired by local botanicals like aloe and marula and begin with a “Welcome of the Wild” ritual, a sacred water blessing and grounding foot soak. Expert therapists curate personalised experiences that flow through breathwork, meditation, and yoga, while signature ceremonies blend indigenous ingredients with age-old healing practices. A fitness centre, outdoor pool with sweeping savannah views, and curated herbal infusions complete the wellness sanctuary.

I arrived here expecting a luxurious safari. I left with something far more meaningful. A deeper connection to nature. A renewed sense of stillness. And memories that don’t just sit in photographs but live in feeling. A stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp is not just about luxury; it is about perspective. It is about waking up to the wild, witnessing life in its most primal form, and realising how small we are within it. And yet, how deeply connected!
