Soda addiction is real. It’s as real as diabetes, cavities, weaker bones, and a protruding belly – all the perilous effects soda has on your body.
WHAT MAKES SODA SO ADDICTING?
Mostly because it contains high doses of corn syrup (sugar) and caffeine – two of the most addicting things people consume, no matter where you are in the world. Both act as stimulants often conceived ‘rewarding’ and their effects fade as soon as they build so your brain’s left wanting more. And that’s how the cycle of drinking soda day to night envelopes.
HOW TO TELL YOU’RE ADDICTED?
If you’re experiencing either of these symptoms, chances are your addiction has developed. But it’s not the end of it. You can always take control back, and here are some ways to assist you positively:
HOW TO TELL YOU’RE ADDICTED?
If you’re craving soda, or something sweet, chances are you’re extremely dehydrated. Grab a glass of water to energize yourself. Start replacing your cravings with water at first. If water seems too bland or boring to start with, mix it up with some flavor like basil, lemon, or a fresh fruit.
DRINK WATER

CHANGE YOUR DIET
Certain foods are prone to inviting soda cravings. For example, if you’re having pizzas or burgers, you’ll naturally want to have some soda as well. The biggest way to bring a change is by changing that very diet. Realize what kind of food makes you want to crave soda and start replacing it with something healthier.
FIND A SUBSTITUTE
If drinking water doesn’t help much, try finding a substitute for your soda. Teas are one of the best alternatives to sodas. Hot herbal, green, or black tea is ideal. If caffeine is what’s irking you, coffee is still a better option than your soda. Other alternatives include unsweetened iced tea and kombucha.
AVOID GOING COLD TURKEY
For some people, going completely off soda might not be a good option considering it has both caffeine and sugar, and if one’s emotionally attached to these cans it could do some serious harm. Make sure to understand the severity of your addiction and don’t go completely cold turkey. Reduce the amount of soda you consume daily and make sure to track that progress. It’ll keep you motivated and willing in the long haul.
QUIT QUITTING
The road to beating addiction isn’t straight. Quit quitting on giving up your addiction. It’s okay to have slip-ups. It’s okay to feel you’re not going anywhere with your withdrawal. You simply need to keep going and keep trying. Confide with your friends or family and ask them to assist you in your journey.
